Curated by Gaffa 2016 emerging curators: Akira & Nathan Lasker. As part of Gaffa's Emerging Curators program, recent graduates Akira and Nathan Lasker will present three exhibitions.

INFORMATION

Subterranea presents the work of three emerging artists in Sydney to explore how art intervenes in the everyday to uncover its underpinning psychological meanings. Probing at the behaviours and insecurities of society, the artists in this exhibition act as ‘provocateurs’ who look at the everyday as a series of art instructions to test the limits of what is and what is not acceptable. The works of the artists all uncover or construct narratives around places and practices based on the secrets that transpire, engaging with and furnishing them with their own desires like an apartment. In doing so, they unearth the psychological subterranean of society’s insecurities that lie underneath the surface. The artists also provoke audiences to reconsider how they inhabit society with their own behavioural furniture.

Subterranea is part one of three in Akira and Nathan Lasker’s curatorial project. Each exhibition reflects an aspect of Akira and Nathan Lasker’s artistic collaboration by presenting a selection of fellow artists that they admire and organising them around a conceptual theme.

Featuring the work of: Dileepa Dayananda, Pamela Pirovic and Yiorgo Yiannopoulos

CURATOR BIO:

Akira and Nathan Lasker are twins who form a loose artist collaborative. They employ video performances to explore how everyday rituals and the gestures associated with them can become absurd theatres. In their mutual mimicries, everyday actions become intense affective experiences of abjectness and comical humour that reflect on how we constantly perform through our daily lives.

Akira and Nathan Lasker are graduating from the Bachelor of Visual Arts at Sydney College of the Arts. They are currently making work for SafARI 2016, curated by Sophie Kitson and Louise Dibbens.
